I have recently purchased a pair of sugar tongs dated 1856/57 but am unable to identify the maker's mark. It looks like , an r and an s or g in lowercase.

Hi,

Welcome to the Forum.

The maker of your tongs was Thomas Sewell. Sewell was apprenticed to Thomas Watson in 1818 and likely continued working for Watson as a journeyman until Watson's death in 1845, following that event, Sewell purchased Watson's business. He was Warden of the Newcastle Company fifteen times and died on the 30th October 1883 aged 80 years.
