Unusual Lion Passant

Hi all,

I have this spoon but the lion pasant marks seem quite unusual.






I haven't seen much exeter silver in person but the lion passant is completely off centre in the cartouche (More obvious in person than the photo) is this common to pieces of this time?

Hi,

That is a normal lion for the date. The engraver was eventually replaced, probably by William Wyon, and certainly later by his son Leonard Charles Wyon, an engraver from the Royal Mint in London.

I've attached below a photo of the 1844 and 1845 hallmarks to show the difference in quality.
