"JC" Exeter.

Postby paulh » Fri Mar 13, 2009 1:12 pm

Another mystery mark. I cannot find this Exeter maker’s mark anywhere. It seems to be “JC” and as you can see from the contemporary engraving on the spoon, dates from around 1743. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Paul.

Hi,

The likely maker was Joseph Collier of Plymouth. Collier was Free 1714 and died in 1764.

I can find no other 'JC' entered at Exeter that would be a good fit datewise. Although this is a different mark than the one shown in Jacksons, it is stated in Tim Kent's 'West Country Silver Spoons and Their Makers' that other marks attributed to Collier are noted.

Thanks Trev,

I had considered Joseph Collier. Richard Rendall’s work shows three of his marks, none of which match this one, but he does seem the most likely candidate, based on the time period.
