Ciogarette case : Confused about Chester Hallmark

Postby StantonRoux » Sat Aug 01, 2009 10:24 am

Hi There

I have a sterling silver cigarette case and I am abit confused about the mark.

I bought it thinking it was an antique but now I am abit confused.
According to the website the makers mark that is on there S.B & Co Ld but that mark was registered in 1927.But the date letter represents 1902 I think.

Also what does the W infront of the marks mean.

Any help would be appreciated

Thanks
Stanton

The mark certainly does not look like it reads "S.B & Co Ld", please post a link to a larger image of it.

Thanks, Tom

From what I see of the marks, sponsor looks more like SB & S LD which would be S Blanckansee & Sons Limited, whilst the date I prefer is the B for 1927.

I have confirmed the mark it is definately S Blanckansee & Sons Limited
that specific mak was registered 1927 so it definately cannot be 1902.
I would also prefer the b from 1927.

Thanks for the help.

Perhaps anybody could let me know what the W is for.

Thanks

Hello Stanton,
The letter W was probably a tally mark which would identify the worker who made the case for S Blanckensee & Sons Ltd.
