In the Louis XVI style, in vogue ca 1765-ca 1790. Shapes and decorations are symmetrical. The shapes are smooth and simple in line, with small decorations on them; garlands and medallions hanging from crumpled bows. Bellied sides, with applied ribbon tied swags above a part fluted lower body, high pine cone pull-off cover with beaded rim, height 17cm, diameter 16 cm, weight 593 gram.

Carel Stephanus Hureau or Hurau, descendant of French Huguenot refugees; born 13th August 1755, died 10th February 1831, 75 years old in The Hague.

Assay groove (zigzag line) both on box and cover. Next to box’s assay groove, the centre point, has been repaired. Notice the hammer marks around the inserted centre point. What has happened?
Hureau probably had the tobacco jar inspected and assayed before the decoration of the jar was completely finished. After assay, back in his workshop and applying the final decorations, the centre point was damaged to such an extent that a round piece of extra silver had to be used for repair. I.e. the tobacco jar has been adjusted to such extent and silver was added after hallmarking, and according the guild’s assay office regulations, the jar had to be re-assayed. In short, Hureau, after the repair took it back to the assay office. The assayer, after checking the fineness of the silver used for the repair, punched the repair with his responsibility mark, being the year letter. Probably a note was made in the assay office register.

In my opinion, the unknown mark is a failed version of the common The Hague year letter U, in a crowned shield.

An internet search does not reveal much of Carel Stephanus Hureau silver work.
