unknown marks

Post by R ingo »

Hello,

a friend of mine got an old silver spoon an ask me to help him. The spoon looks to me like made in the Netherlands, so I would like to ask you for some help.
I have no idea, if the spoon is an original or if he was made later.

Kind regards, Ringo

Hi Ringo,

My opinion an original old spoon, made in the Dutch city of Hoorn. The town mark is based on the coat of arms a music horn on a bow. See:
viewtopic.php?f=5&t=32028
The year letter is not clear to me, could be a D ?, the faded mark is the provincial standard mark, province of Holland, the lion rampant in shield under crown, introduced in the year 1663 . The maker's mark, I will check later, most likely unidentified.

Best,

Peter.

The fig-shaped bowl merges directly into the flat molded stem. The stem is crowned by a double profile edge and a flower bud. This type of spoon was only made in the cities of Enhuizen and Hoorn. The maker's mark is possibly a bell (?), for; Claes and Reynier Bel, both registered in Hoorn, Reynier 1657....... and Claes 1667-1684. Reynier and Claes were known makers of this type of spoons. Perhaps the maker's mark is a cramp-iron, registered unknown 1637-1674, or a flower stem unidentified 1670...
Is it possible to get a clear, enhanced image of the year letter?

Indeed a rare and old occasion spoon.

Enjoy the weekend, regards,

Peter.

Hello Peter,
I thank you very much.
I have only one Foto of the date letter. I think, it is not good enough. I have the spoon not here. But I think I can tomorrow make a better Foto.

Hi, thanks, the weight compared to the length is correct for this type of ornamental spoon. I am waiting for some feedback regarding this spoon of one of my sparring partners. What can you tell about the provenance of this spoon, has it been a family piece?

Enjoy the festive season.

Hello Peter,

sorry for my late answer. The spoon comes from Hallig Hooge, North Frisia. But nobody knows, wether the spoon was a family objekt or was bought later.

Regards,
Ringo
