Willem Hoogland was born in Steenwijk in 1709, married Johanna Rooda ( born Haarlem 1699 – deceased Alkmaar 1751) in Haarlem, and in 1734 became a member of the guild of silversmiths in Alkmaar. He and his wife had three sons, of whom the middle one, Willem junior (1736 - 1807) reached adulthood and followed in his father's footsteps. Willem senior died in January 1797 and was buried in the Grote Kerk in Alkmaar.
Most of the today known silver items made by Willem Hoogland Sr. are in the collection of Stedelijk Museum Alkmaar. Including the only known 18th century silver tobacco pot made in Alkmaar and also made by Willem Hoogland in 1746.
18th Century silver made in Alkmaar is very rare because very few Alkmaar silver objects have been preserved.
The only known silver 18th century tobacco pot made in Alkmaar.
