Help with spice box

Post by barcabod »

Hi I am new to the forum and hope someone can help

I have a silver spice box, I have looked and the marks and have researched the marks. I can make out

Minerva head with an M which I believe is Schoonhoven
Date letter y which I think is 1858
Lion with a number 2 underneath which I believe means 833 silver.

The makers mark is what I am having trouble with and have been trying to find the maker for days now trawling through dutch silver makers online.
Any suggestions would be grateful

Sorry for all the posts I am/was having trouble with the pictures first time I have ever tried to do this

I should have said the nearest maker I can put to the mark is Willem Lobensteijn or his father Peter.

Again any help would be gratefully recieved

Hi Bill, welcome to the forum. Silver scent box, vinaigrette or in Dutch called Loderein doosje or Loderein box from "l'eau de reine. The Eau de Cologne, or aromatic vinegar, would be contained within this box soaked in a sponge.
Please read how to embedded the required images
viewtopic.php?f=5&t=42199
Do us a favour and show all marks including Minerva head and the year letter. Clear enhanced images.
Pieter Lobensteijn his maker's mark: L above 76 and PL above 44 active in Schoonhoven 1835-1859. Willem Lobensteijn maker's mark : WL above 83 and WL above 89, active in Schoonhoven 1860-1918. I do not believe the maker's mark on the scent box to be for Pieter Lobensteijn or his son Willem.

Yes, you are right Minerva head regional assay office letter M for Schoonhoven , year letter Y for 1858.
A clear enhanced image of the maker's mark could do the trick.

Bingo the maker's mark appears to me VH conjoined above 33 for; Hermanus Jacobus van Halteren, registered in Schoonhoven 1832- 1863. Hermanus Jacobus van Halteren used two maker's marks: VH conjoined above 3 and VH conjoined above 33.

You sir are an absolute star

I have only just started collecting silver and have learnt a lot about english silver particulary birmingham makers and date letters.

This vinaigrette box has been a mission for me and the wife we have spent the last 3 evenings trying to sort the maker out.

Then you come along and as you say bingo

I cant thank you enough for your help and expertise

Cheers Peter
