Rare Silver ornamental spoon The Fisherman, Delft 1708
Ornamental spoon finial; Fisher wearing thigh boots, in his left hand a fish and in his right hand a pike pole (pikhaak), town mark of Delft; The town mark of Delft is based on a vertical bar with wavy horizontal stripes, to indicate canal "Oude Delft" Canal/Gracht/Delf. Year letter crowned C for 1708. Province of Holland mark the Lion Rampant in crowned shield for 934/1000 fineness. Maker’s mark; Fire in oval or in Dutch Vuur(Brand) for; Adriaen Joosten Bran(d)t, registered in Delft 1658-1713. Length 18 cm, hammered gilded bowl 4.8 - 7.4 cm, weight 47 gram. (2.6 gram per cm).On the back of the spoon bowl the letters I F S and below the letters A I and I A are engraved. It are likely the initials of the giver (s) and the person who received the spoon as a christening gift or for some other special occasion. The spoon still has the traditional seventeenth-century shape of the bowl, handle and finial.

Adriaen Joosten Brandt
On 16-12-1635 Adriaen was baptized in the Nieuwe Kerk in Delft the son of Joost, watchmaker, and Maritje Adreaens van Ceulen. On 24-03-1713 is buried in the Oude Kerk in Delft Adriaen Brant, commissioner of the Rotterdamse Veer. On 19-05-1657 the notice of marriage was registered of Adriaen Joosten Brant, a young man living in the Choorstraat and Grietje Baijaert, a young woman living in the Choorstraat. During the marriage 7 children are born.
In 1658 the guild receives 18 guilders, its name and master's mark are placed in the insculpation plate(mark plate). He was assayer in 1674, 1676, 1678, 1679, 1684, 1687, 1691, 1702, 1705, 1708. In 1690, 1701, During 1704 and 1717 he was Dean.
Apprentices of Adriaen Joosten Brandt and tuition fee paid to the guild 3 guiders; in 1664 Aernolt van der Heijden for one year, in 1665 Henricus van Anckeren, 02-03-1669 Leendert van Couwenhove, 13-05-1671 his son Jacobus Brandt free of charge, 10-04-1673 Antoni Groen, in 1677 son Joost free of charge, 30-11 -1678 Abraham van den Bergh. On 02-01-1679 the guild receives for four students' tuition fees, 12 guilders; Pieter Groen, Cornelis de Man, Michiel van den Ende and Abraham van der Land, in 1683 the guild receives 6 guilders tuition fee for Willem de Man ( came from outside city of Delft?), In 1704 son Cornelis Brandt free of charge.

That is quite wonderful and I love it. I have never seen the fisherman topped spoon before and may not likely ever again. Thank you for sharing Peter
