S1-mark

Post by zilverik »

Hi,

This tealight is made by Jacobus Carrenhof in 1824 (P). There is a mark I don't know: S1, the 'S' above the '1' in an oval. It looks like a Dutch tax-mark, but I can't find it. Who knows?

Kind regards,

zilverik

Hi Zilverik,

S above 1 in striped oval shield is the assayers mark and used for 1st standard silver(934) for: Jan Berend Schöne Jr, registered in Amsterdam assay office & Amsterdam mint office, this particular mark used 1826/1854 (died 1853). Jan Berend Schöne Jr first registered his assayers mark in 1815, total marks used seven(7).

Hi Oel,

Thank you! It is indeed plausible that it is a essayers mark. In what book were you able to find the name?

Kind regards,

Hi Oel,

Thank you!
In my copy of 1995 of Gouda, Netherlands' Responsibility Marks since 1797, the marks are not there. They also lack in the earlier copy's and supplement (1987). So it would have been better to buy the 2009 version. Incredible that it's not there because the Schöne company is a very well known essayers company. By the way, the 2009 copy appears to be sold out.

Kind regards,

zilverik
