Neat old salt shaker (plated?) Decent marks but totally stumped!

Postby bremckee » Fri Oct 16, 2015 4:14 pm

The shaker has a nice rainbow toning to the tarnish and shows a scene of a shepherdess, her two lambs, and a flute player on all sides. The bottom is a scene of heralds, flags, and pieces of armor. One side has a lion passant with 2 beneath. Each of the four corners of the rectangular bottom has a mark. One is clearly a capital H with a dot, I'm thinking on the bottom of the H. Another corner has an Asian symbol, but I'm not sure which language. Out of the other two corners I can only make out what looks like II13 - again I am not sure on that mark.

Any ideas folks? I've spent so much time looking and now my head is spinning.

Hi,

Welcome to the Forum.

You will have far more chance of getting a response if you embed your images as very few people will click on links.

Hi Bremckee,

Looked Dutch to me with pseudo marks, so a quick look at the amazing info written by Oel has solved your query. Look up Herbert Hooijkaas on the link below:

Hi Bremckee

Thanks Steve.
We need a close up of the H13 (ll13) to see if it is made by Hooijkaas or Hovingh and an image the date letter and assay office mark should be helpful.
For Dutch (hall) marks on silver see:

Best,

Peter

Wow, thanks guys. This is actually a ton of info for me to take in. I'll be back later with closeups.

Looking at it again, it's definitely Philip Hovingh.
