SBL Chester hallmarks Dutch or Hanau?

Post by niceguy1 »

Hi

I’m trying to figure out this Samuel Boyce Landeck silver bowl.

Is it Chester 1904? & the F for Foreign? What are the 2 other marks in the middle?

THANKS IN ADVANCE.

Hi, made in the Netherlands for export, Dutch Lion rampant 1 with export key, standard mark for silver 934/1000 fineness this standard mark used 1814-1953.Import marks for Chester, by Samuel Boyce Landeck (SBL), date letter D for 1904, F for import or foreign.
Please check for Dutch maker's mark and office mark or Minerva head with a Dutch date letter, most probably a Gothic U for 1904. Those missing marks could be spread over the object.

It is worth noting that 1904 is when use of the "F" on imported silver was abolished and Chester changed to using the acorn and leaves symbol, so we see both styles of mark with the script D for 1904.

HI OEL

You are right, on closer inspection I see 2 more hallmarks. On the top lip there is a script mark & on the foot the Minerva head.

Hi,

Indeed the date letter Gothic U for 1904 and Minerva head, the maker’s mark might have been erased.
