Unknown Dutch Maker Mark Ca 1805

Postby neurorocker » Wed Nov 07, 2012 12:55 pm

I am trying to research the maker mark on this Dutch spoon. It is a cursive E.R. Spoon has a home engraved date of 1805. Your help is greatly appreciated!

Hi, the appearance of this commemorative spoon certainly looks Dutch and the engraved dotted text is Dutch; Geboren 12 maart 1830 Johantje Sjoersd Koopmans En Is Overleden Den 27 April 1833 Zij was toen 3 jaar oud (Born 12 March 1830 Johantje Sjoersd Koopmans And Died on 27 April 1833. She was 3 years old. The spoon is probably made in the city of Bolsward in the Dutch province of Friesland however there are some marks missing; no assay (city guild) marks, no standard mark and no date letter.
ER could be the maker’s mark and perhaps the spoon has never been assayed and privately made for the bereaved Koopmans family. This particular ER mark is not in my regular books which I have with me at the moment but next week I could check some other references.

Oel.

I looked the spoon over very carefully, but was not able to find any additional hallmarks. I purchased this in a collection of Dutch silver. One of the other pieces is exceedingly fine. None of them appear to be related except to say they are all Dutch. They date between 1805 and 1935. Yes, Oel, I would be most grateful if you would take a look for the ER mark! Thank you so much! Nate

Hi Nate,

In the book; Dutch Goldsmiths’ and silversmiths’ marks and names prior to 1812 by Citroen it is mentioned ER executed in italics for; E. Rienstra, located in the city of Sneek, a city close to Bolsward and registered only for one year; 1807-1808.
The dotted engraved text could have been done in 1833 or later.
