Help to identify marks

Postby joho » Sun Aug 05, 2012 11:38 am

Hi - I need help identifing these marks from a set of 6 buttons. Could be Dutch, but not sure. The marks are; an anchor, a tree (possibly) and an E. Could the marks be spurious? Many thanks John

Hi Joho,

Difficult, both anchor and tree could be a maker’s mark. During the Dutch Guilds; a date letter only in combination with a city guild mark. Small/miniature items sometimes only maker’s mark or with maker’s mark and city mark with or without a date letter. My first impression not Dutch and perhaps pseudo marks, to give the buttons an antique look. What can you tell us about the provenance of the buttons?

Hi Oel - thanks very much for your opinion and information. Unfortunately I have no further information about the buttons or their provenance. My 'Dutch' assumption was purely a guess, so no closer to identification. I think at this time, all we can say about them is that they are probably European dating sometime in 18th to 20th century. Thanks again - kind regards John
