Large silver jug - is it Dutch?

Postby techsol » Thu Jun 02, 2011 12:25 pm

Hi, I have this large silver jug with hunting scene decoration, it has London import marks for 1900 and on the base there are what I believe to be Dutch hallmarks. I would be most grateful for any help in interpreting these hallmarks.

Hello Techsol,

In my opinion the marks are not Dutch hallmarks but pseudo marks. Perhaps put on in the Netherlands or Germany. Around the turn of the 19th century old continental silver pieces were in great demand in the U.K and further abroad. Dutch and German silversmiths (not only in Hanau )were eager to supply the market with copies of old continental silver pieces carrying pseudo or fake (hall)marks.

Regards,

Oel
