Wondering if anyone can assist with this Aposotle spoon, Not sure if its Chester? The mark looks like an early Chester Town mark.

Would appreciate some thoughts on this one as I am unsure.

Then we have the makers mark? ,,,Closest I can find is Robert Pilkington(2197) London Goldsmiths. Mentions him between 1724 and 1725, so then where does date letter D come in?....And if its Pilkington then whats the town mark?

I may be looking in wrong direction here so any help would be appreciated.

I hope I don't disappoint too much, but, to me, this looks like one of the many types of apostle spoons complete with pseudo marks that were manufactured in the Netherlands around the period 1890-1910. This was the time when the work that was coming out of Hanau was at its peak and demand for earlier looking silver pieces was at its upmost. Many silversmiths in the Netherlands took advantage in the popularity of older looking silver pieces and produced such wares.

I'll move your post to the Dutch section where hopefully someone will confirm/deny the above.

Thanks Trev, I appreciate that, Not at all disapointed as such...The mark threw me and it came in a boxed set of 12, however this is a replacement as the other are all London Victorian examples so possibly one was lost and this was a later replacement.. Hopefully someone can give a little more information.

Indeed the demand for older looking silver pieces was at its upmost in the late 19e and early 20e century in Holland. There was a reason behind that, I heard once. For older pieces of silver for export to the US and England there was no or less tax. I have not seen the taxlaw yet, but I think it is plausible reason.

I found some info. Citroen (Valse zilvermerken in Nederland, 1977) mentioned that about 1870 the concept of Antiques for objects older than 100 years entered taxlaws. Silver exporters from Holland made a profit from the low taxs in England and the U.S. for antique silver. In Schoonhoven they made special silver for these countries with pseudomarks. The importers knew that it was not old according the bookkeeping of a London silvershop.
