Rat tail ? Spoon

Postby Thames03 » Tue Sep 21, 2010 5:54 am

I do not know what type of spoon this is. Maybe from a church. The back of the spoon says 1896 J * C. Any help is appreciated

Hi Thames03,

Regarding the marks: the B could be a malformed Dutch date letter for 1836, supposed to be in a circle, the flower like mark not Dutch, perhaps both marks are non Dutch or so called pseudo marks. The only mark I recognize is the Minerva head used 1814-1905. The identifying assay office letter is located in the top section of the helmet. However the Minerva head is only used in combination with both a standard hallmark, to indicate fineness, and a date letter. Please check your spoon for a small proper date letter and a standard mark. I believe the spoon is called a Birth spoon, the inscription refers to the happy ocation of the birth of J*C in 1896

Oel

Hi Oel,

Could this spoon be of the type that was being made 'in the antique style' at Schoonhoven at the turn of the 19th/20th century?

Hi Thames03,

Welcome to the Forum.

Can you post an image of the mark on the side of the spoon bowl?

Hi Trev,

Yes I believe this Birth spoon or Memorial spoon has been made in the antique style, perhaps the Assay Office Letter reads, M for Schoonhoven. However let us wait for more information provided by Thames03, before drawing a conclusion.
Best regards,
Oel

Hi,

London import marks for 1891. Importer: Edward/Edwin Thompson Bryant.

Hi,

Try to learn and read. Please show us a clear photo of the Dutch marks. Next time also show all the marks in one go. Not one by one. On your last photo, the unclear left inserted mark, looks like Dutch maker's mark.

Regards,

Oel
