Hi,

Dutch Lion Rampant used for silver of the first (1) standard, Fineness 934, dates 1814-1953,
S1 is the essayeur mark of Jan Berend Schöne Jr., Amsterdam
The maker’s mark for George Bennewitz & Anthony Knottenbelt (Bennewitz & Zonen, Fa ), Amsterdam 1826-1838

It seems the sword was the mark for imported articles… It is possibly I was mistaken? What do the letters «JCM» stand for?

Hi,

Not JCM but JGM for Johan Georg Meijer Sr., Amsterdam, 1828/1860. So he could be the maker together with Bennewitz. Perhaps you could check for a valid Dutch date letter? I see no sword but it looks like S1 to me.

Regards,
Oel

Hi!

Thank you very much. Unfortunately, there is not the data letter on my article…
Certainly there is not the sword on my item... But I have never heard about the mark «S1» as about the Holland imported mark…

Hi,
The sword marks used as the standard mark on articles too small for the full hallmarking etc , never used as an importer's mark see:
