Decanter Marks Mystery

Postby C Halasey » Tue Jun 22, 2010 2:05 pm

I'm trying to identify this single symbol hallmark is it old sheffield? Your help would be appreciated. I'm not sure if sheffield marks must have makers name also marked on item. Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to the Forum.

A larger photo of the mark would be of great assistance.

Dutch fineness mark on "little" items - until 1.1.

Postby silverport » Tue Jun 22, 2010 7:30 pm

Hello

These marks are Dutch silver fineness marks on little items; the same mark was/is used for both finenesses of first standard = 925-1,000 = Sterling, and for second standard = 833-1,000.

It seems to me, that in this case it was used for reason of fragility of the item - if they were assayed in mounted version.

This special »sword mark« is, as I could see in your photo (by my interpretation of the there visible form of swords handle), at least the lower one, in the version of 1814 until 1 Jan. 1906.

The upper one looks like to me (by my interpretation of the there visible form of swords handle), to be the version from 1 Jan. 1906 on, until 1 Sept. 1953.

This difference could happen, because these are two separately made, and maybe also assayed parts?

So, my interpretation is, that these items are assayed around 1906 - and be Dutch as well.

The maker's mark is missing? So, actually the maker remain of course unknown.

Kind regards silverport
