Antique spoon be Dutch? - of course not

Hello Amanda

Welcome to this Forum; and with your question to.

If there is only one mark — as in your case it seem to be —, and by this kind of pseudo antique product range, normally all “alarm bells” should ring very loud and there should be “red alert”! — Especially women’s money is then in a dangerous situation.

I haven’t found this mark in my «Nederlandse Goud- en Zilvermerken» by E. Voet jr. — 8th edition correct. by Ir. P.W. Voet (1975) — nor in «Valse Zilvermerken in Nederland» (Forgery of Hallmarks Netherlands) by K.A. Citroen (1977).

It seem to me, this is a crude reproduction, made else where — maybe “plated” only to.

My advice: Make you wise before you buy — in «925-1000» you could learn so much you never would need on Silver, Plated and Jewellery. It’s cheaper as every “wrong” buy to.

Sorry! Have a nice X-mass and a Prosperous 2010 as a silver novice!

Kind regards silverport

Pseudo marks are sometimes found along with genuine marks, so give the decorated parts of the spoon a good going over with a loupe. Dutch assayers were notorious for hiding hallmarks within the decorative elements. I've always liked their approach, it shows the bureaucracy had a sensitivity to the silversmith's design - but it sometimes makes it very difficult to find the marks.

Regards, Tom
