Lodderein box request for assistance

This Lodderein box is made in the Netherlands. Date letter T for 1853. The Office mark Minerva Head with what looks like M? for Schoonhoven On the base we find the Lion Passant, detached indistinctly the maker’s mark. However on the left we clearly can see a mark ‘GG Frog? G’. This mark is not in my books. Does someone recognize this mark? I appreciate your assistance. Hi Oel,

The frog looks actually like a sphinx or a lying lion to me and the mark is clearly struck two times, so we look for a maker with a mark "G lion/sphinx G" in an oval and the maker "G. over 93" in a square.



If you find it, please let us know.

Great work!! Thank you very much again you teach me’ how to look at hall marks’. I believe it could be G. over 28 for Dirk Hendrik Greup Sr. He worked in Schoonhoven 1837-1864 see Netherlands Responsibility marks #6254.

It is indeed the mark! Now there is only "G lion/sphinx G" left.
Could it perhaps be a retailer mark?

Hi everyone and Oel (nice name),

Lodderein comes from "l'eau de reine", a scented water, that was put on a very small piece of sponge in the box.
When you speak out the french l'eau de reine very quickly in dutch, it becomes lodderein.

By the way, I was researching for the sphinx mark, but didn't find it. I have the feeling I saw it somewhere, but that doesn't help us now...

Thanks, I'd always assumed Dutch boxes of this size and proportion were related to snuff, glad to know they are in the vinaigrette family.

I also have a nagging suspicion that I've seen the sphinx/lion before and for some completely unknown reason, my brain has it associated with Italy. I do hope someone pegs it properly.
