Old 19th Dutch Inkwell / S&P? - Tray with Crystal Need H

Postby pauline5555 » Sun May 24, 2009 12:02 am

Just acquired this beautiful old Dutch set. It is all intact. All the small silver pieces bear the tiny cross. The hallmarks are on the bottom. I believe it is 1843 from the date letter. Any help would be appreciated. I am wondering what this set was for. One of the jars has a salt shaker type top and the other is just silver rimmed under the lids.

Thanks a lot.

Through the Dutch silver search I found Bonebakker & Zoon. Was this a retailer and Hf is makers mark?

Could makers initials be JH rather than Hf ? Possibly J Helweg of Amsterdam.

Hi,

I agree with Joho.

Maker's mark JH- Jacob Helweg Amsterdam 1822-1864
Date letter I- 1843
Minerva head with the letter "A" in the helmet- the assay office in Amsterdam
Bonebakker & Zoon-In this case the retailer
Lion rampant- silver standard 934/1000

Best regards/JAKJO

Jacob Helweg. Born 18th October 1798, Died 14th April 1875.

This photo of Jacob was taken in 1870. He was twice married, first to Catharina Maria Lagmulder (b.1803 d.1831) on the 2nd June 1824 an then to Johanna Sophia Boers (b.1807 d.1864) on the 23rd May 1834.

This is Jacob's son, Jacob Hendrik Helwig, who was also a silversmith. This photo was taken in 1885.
