French? silver beaker

Post by ktiggeloven »

dear fellow forum members,
I've recently bought a small silver beaker, with a small (ca 1.5mm) mark which I can not place. It looks to be some kind of wolfs or boars head facing the right. The beaker has the name Augusta on it, making me think it might be French or Italian. I hope somebody can be of assistence.

Hello Kasper,
I do not know where it was made, but suspect it is German. The mark is a Dutch tax mark used on foreign made silver 1814-1953. I've always thought of it as a wolf (are there wolves in the Netherlands?)

Hi,

There are wolves in the Netherlands, only in the zoos though. It is actually a boar's head. Between 1831 and 1853 it was also used on old domestic works.

Thanks to both of you.
Knowing that it's Dutch I've actually found out a bit more about it. In this cartouche it was used from 1831 till 1893, andf after (till 1907) in a triangle. It actually stands for silver objects which are foreign or older pieces (until 1853), of which the silver standard was not tested, but on which taxes have been paid.
Thanks again,
Kasper
