Bird - Koningsvogel

Postby overlord » Thu Dec 27, 2007 12:09 pm

Hello,

i'm new to this forum and i'm a member of a Dutch guild called St. Nicolaasgilde from Valkenswaard and i'm in the process of making a book about all our silver items.
I'm allmost finished, but there are some markings i can't seem to find.

The first is from a silver bird, a so called "Koningsvogel" (or Kingsbird) and it's probably from the early 16th century.

Total picture,

Photo of the mark,

Drawing of the mark made by me.

I hope someone can help me in the next few days, because i want to take the book to the publishers??!!?!?!?!

You can find the details in the "gildezilverboek" section, and some picture of silver kingssilver under the "Gildekamer" section by clicking on "Koningsschilden 1609-2007"

Hi byron,

if i understand your question correctly, you want some info (in Englisch) about our Kings bird?

well here it is,

Height: 120mm
Width: 150mm
Overall weight: 150gr. (including chain)

It's crown and collar are made of gold (probably goldplated).
On the reverse side are the words "WEERD" and "VIF LOOT" engraved and a (probably) makers mark.
This mark is probably older then the oldest item we have (which is the round medallion from 1609) (so in 2009, 400 years).

The name "WEERD" is an old name for the town of Valkenswaard, it has also been called, Wedert and Verckensweert ( the name Valkenswaard is derived from the Dutch word for Falcon "VALK", because there where a lot of people who where breeding Falcons, even for the Dutch royal family.

There is no explanation for the words "VIF LOOT", so we do not know what it means.

Also the makers mark is not known,, not from whom or when.

I hope this explanes it a bit better, if you want anything else translated, please ask.

Greetings,
Marco Hendriks

marco --

meant to tell you also that the bird, or at least the medallion, being from 1609, is from the 17th century (the english way of reckoning, short for 'we are now in the 17th century')
