Help with a Birmingham Maker Please

Hello.

I recently purchased a small silver and enamel box at a fair and would like help identifying the maker please. I can't get a good picture of the marks, though most are fairly clear.

The maker's mark is HP.& S with just the one full stop. This is followed by an anchor, a lion passant and a date letter W indicating 1946-7.

The top of the first H is a little rubbed though from the shape I am sure as I can be that it is an H.

OK. I haven't been able to take a very high res picture as my camera is cheap and nasty. This is the best I can do.

Could it be H Pidduck. Searching for the Henry Perkins mark I found that one and it might be right.

Hi Ian,

Welcome to the Forum.

There are no restrictions preventing any sponsor/manufacturer from using any assay office they choose, and they may, and often do, use multiple offices.

I agree with AG2012, this is the mark of Henry Perkins & Sons, but I suspect the dating should be 1921, rather than 1946.

Hello Dognose and AG2012.

Isn't life and silver complicated!?

I take your point about the different assay offices. The reason I thought this was 1946 was simply that the W looks upper case especially compared size-wise to the other marks beside it. The bottom edge of the date letter border does look smooth under a loupe though which does seem to suggest 1921 so thank you for that.

Also looking again and comparing the maker's mark to those on AG2012's link below I notice mine has those bracketed ends and isn't square.

So thank you Dognose and AG2012. Hopefully mystery solved. Next purchase will be an easy one I hope!
