Salt Cellar - maker/date?

Postby filbofan » Wed Aug 02, 2006 2:39 pm

I have unearthed what I think is an old salt cellar. It's Sterling Silver and the hallmark shows an anchor - Birmingham I think, a lion - Sterling silver and the date letter is K. Is this 1893?
The makers mark is hard to read but it looks like a capital 'A' with 'ROS LTD' to the right and left.
Does this mean anything to anyone?
The salt cellar also has a pretty spoon with a shell type pattern. I thought it was the original spoon but the makers mark looks to be TMM and the year 'n'. This is even smaller and very difficult to read!
Any advice/assistance most gratefully appreciated.

Appears to be the mark of Adie Brothers Ltd., Birmingham, England.
Founded in 1879. In 1963 became part of British Silverware who closed in 1968. I read the K mark as 1934.

I do not think it is a salt cellar but how big is it please...if, as it looks, it is about 4"" across it is a bon-bon dish. Salt cellars were generally not made on pedestals as salt at one time was a precious commodity and would need not to be spilt. In 1934-5...salt was less precious but was normally served from a closed container with holes in the top...as it is now.
Best wishes, mIke.
