WHO IS THE MAKER OF THIS 1868 PIECE?

Postby niceguy1 » Tue Jul 29, 2014 10:17 am

HI ALL

Who would be the maker of this decanter handle/spout? It’s hallmarked Birmingham 1868 & makers mark is 2 or 3 letters, I can only make out the last one which is the letter c.

THANK YOU

Niceguy,

This appears to be a claret jug spout. Started looking for R.C, was one Birmingham maker a Robert Chandler in an oval cartouche but too late. Then walked through possible A.R.C, B.R.C, etc until I reached G R Collis & Co whose mark is G.R.C in an irregular cartouche. It's the last of four marks that was registered in 1858, seen in 1863. George Richard Collis & George Whitegrave at Church Street Birmingham.

Have a look see what you think.

You are most welcome my friend.

You always present us with interesting challenges. Look forward to reading them even when I can't engage.

A very good Sunday to you and yours
