Birmingham small silver bowl identification

Postby Piramida » Tue Mar 11, 2014 8:01 am

Dear forum members,

This is my first time posting and my knowledge of silver is miniscule to say the least.

The reason I am posting is to ask for your help in deducing the maker and dating this silver bowl that has been in my family for a bit of time and is said to be quite old.

From the resources provided by this website I learned that it vas mad in Birmingham by the mark of the anchor and lion. The year it was made is unclear to me since the V might indicate, from the year chart, something as early as 1793 or late as 1920.

The maker's mark is unclear upon close inspection it looks like an S followed by either an E or an A.

What really puzzles me is the letter K that precedes the maker's mark, who's does not fit in to the small knowledge I have of British silver hallmarks.

I am very much looking forward to any help that may be provided by the knowledgeable members of this forum.

Regards,

Ivan

Hi Ivan,

Welcome to the Forum.

That appears to be the mark (S-star-B) of Synyer & Beddoes (Harry Synyer & Charles Joseph Beddoes) of Vyse Street, Birmingham. The date of assay would be 1920.

The 'K' mark would likely identify the actual workman who made the bowl. See: Tally or Journeyman's mark at: http://www.925-1000.com/silverglossary5.html

Trev.
