Engraved "cigarette" case 6.5 x 9.7 x 1.0 cm

Postby Cocoshelados » Thu Oct 31, 2013 6:08 pm

This is my first foray into the world of Hallmarks and I very much appreciate the time that has gone into the development of this website. Thank you! I think that rather easily identified the Birminham Anchor, Queen Victoria and the Silver Standard. However, the wheels came off when it came to the date. What I see appears to be a "J" but it seems that J is under represented in the date codes. Likewise what I see as makers marks "D & N" doesn't appear in the list of Birmingham makers.

Any help to get me on the right track would be very appreciated.

Thank you

David W

Hi David,

Welcome to the Forum.

The date letter (upside down in your image) is an 'e' for 1879.

The maker was Deakin & Nephew of 30, Regent Place, Birmingham.

Hi Trev, I am David

Thanks for your fast and succinct answer. The bilaterally symmetrical anchor, really nailed down my incorrect belief that there was only one possible orientation and I was looking at it.

Thanks to the Miracle of photo editing, I flipped the image 180 degrees and I saw the prettiest "e" I have ever seen. I have not yet navigated to the date page (I think that making it easier to do so would be a good idea) but I am guessing that it would be between 1830 - 1833. This guess is based on the engraved insciption

.R.A.C.
11th Dec 1833

You also cleared up the problem of framing my next question about the mysterious "Sixth symbols."
The D&N jumped out at me immediately after I saw the "e"

Again, Many Thanks, I am very appreciative of your help.

I'll be back soon ( and will have looked the subject from all quadrants.)

David
