Two Pin Cushions, Makers' Marks?

Postby carling » Sun Dec 04, 2005 11:25 am

Can anyone identify the makers of these two pin cushions?

1) H.C.F. assayed in Birmingham in 1911. There is a also a Registered Design Number on this pin cushion: 587416.

I don't know the first maker, but I have come across the mark before - anyone have Crisp Jones?

As for the second - H Mathews, prolific maker of a wide range of pieces.

Many thanks for your helpful reply, Waylander. Appreciated. The "H" is probably for Henry according to
this page. Good ol' Google!

The BAO has just come up with the goods for the first one:

H.C.F from 1911 indicates H.C. Freeman, a silversmith of Hatton Gardens. Interestingly, he first registered his mark on 24th October 1910, but the register also shows that his punches were 'ground off ' i.e. his mark cancelled in September of 1924.

H C Freeman Ltd and Henry Charles Freeman also assayed in Chester from 1886 through 1952 from their 31 Hatton Garden, London EC1 address.
