Hello everyone... :-)

I got this cigarette case a few years ago and I'm interested in its history.

Searched the forum and the Internet and came up with the following:
It seems to be made by a jeweler called L.Kramer & Co that used to manufacture in Egypt and the Sudan in the early 1900. The parts were manufactured by J.Gloster of Birmingham in 1850 and the (American) patent number is from 1879...

Does this seem correct?

How can parts of a 1879 design be manufactured in 1850, only to be assembled in ~1900??? Confused...

Thanks a million for your help...

Greetings from a cold and rainy Cologne, Germany

Hello and welcome to the forum.
The maker's mark JG LTD wasn't registered with the Birmingham Assay Office by J Gloster Ltd until around 1909.
The absence of the sovereign's head as a duty mark is indicative of an item assayed after 1890 when the duty ended.
The date letter B is therefore most likely to be for 1926-7 rather than 1850-1.
The L Kramer & Co stamp would have been as retailers.
Presumably the design patent was still effective at the manufacture date hence the stamp.

Thanks a million Mike... :-)

I looked at the date table and it stops at 1924.
Didn't think about the 20 year cycle either :-(
So obviously B would have to be 1926/7.

This explains everything.

Thank you...
Michael
