Lovely Victorian Teapot need help with marks

Hi,

I found this lovely Victorian Tea set which as far as I can tell is hall marked as follows:

Lion passant, City of London, Date mark 1873, Queen Victoria duty mark and maker mark W.

Can those more experienced here confirm these for me?

Does anyone have knowledge of who this maker might be?

Thanks in advance for any help and I appreciate the availability of this forum.

Best wishes,

Rich T.

Your maker is not merely W. The teapot shows it the best, but the mark is WI (?) or WL (?) in overlapping circles.

1873 is a bit late for my references. The best source is Culme’s The Directory of Gold & Silversmiths, Jewellers and allied Traders 1838-1914. It is very rare and hideously expensive. Hopefully someone will have a copy.

Hi Waylander,

Thanks for the info and reference on the makers marks. I will try to locate the book but it is a hard set to find. There is a copy on reference at the state university so I will try to find it.

In terms of the other marks, I am new at this so I could use your confirmation. Do you agree that the city mark is London and the date is 1873?

Thanks for your help,
