What is the date on these tongs - I suspect they would be around 1800 / 1830.

Cast Tongs can be said to be made between 1765 to 1784 (ish) they replaced Sugar Nips and were superseded by standard Sugar Tongs, this pair were assayed before 1784.

As for the maker William Garrard was a largeworker, and worked from 1735 to c1755, so it seems unlikley he made these Tongs

There are two makers of this period who it could be, that is William Goslee (mark entered 15/3/1771 or William Godfrey (mark entered 8/1/1772)

Because of the style of the punch l feel it is William Goslee.

Regards

Nigel
