Help with Identifying a Sterling Mark

Postby lemahaf » Sat Feb 24, 2007 2:30 pm

I am trying to identify this British sterling mark on this sterling repousse bowl. I believe it is London, but cannot determine what the L stands for. I also believe the woman's profile means it is from 1838-1890? I cannot find what the initials W.C. stand for.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,
Your bowl has been assayed in London in 1886 (the date letter L corresponds to this year). The makers mark is probably an early mark of William Comyns.

Hope this helps.

I think this could be the person you are looking for,
William Chinnery
London - reg. 1825
good luck, it looks like a nice peice.

Looks like William Comyns, as Dinio said.
Why do you think William Chinnery is the maker?

Agree with Miles, and Dinio looks like the mark he entered (two sizes) 13 June 1878, address 41 Beak Street London

I'd second (or third) Comyns
