London silver serving spoon ? date

Post by populous38 »

Hi guys
I'm having difficulty dating this large silver serving spoon. Date letter is a bit worn but looks like a Q. Wondered if anyone has any idea.
Appreciated as always.

Hi Gary,

I would have said the 'O' of 1769. The maker is Elizabeth Tookey, her mark contained within a lozenge, indicating her status as a widow.

:::: Do you have more information about this "widow lozenge" hallmark? ::::
:::: I have pieces by Mary Chawner and I believe she was a widow? ::::::::::

The lozenge shape seems to have been an 18th century feature. Mary Chawner was widowed in 1834. Other examples are:

Elizabeth Aldridge (c1765)

Elizabeth Jackson (1748)
