Hallmark Verification Calamander Wood Box with Silver lock and trim

Post by CallumA »

I am having a problem with the middle hallmark. I have researched and found Mary Chawner. 925/1000 pure. Middle???? Year 1897. Any help would be much appreciated along with verification of what I have found so far. Thank you in advance for you time.

Hello and welcome to the forum.

The mark you are having difficulty identifying is a leopard's head which means the object was assayed in London.

You have correctly identified the year, 1897, and the 925/1000 silver.

Silvermakersmarks.co.uk shows that Mary Chawner's mark was first registered in 1834. I have some doubts that she was still active 63 years later.

The photos of the maker's mark are a little out of focus, but if there is a 'dot' in between the M and C, it may be M Chapman, Son & Co Ltd registered 1892.

Nice catch AG2012.

Yes the comment on the website mentions:
"A similar mark without stop registered Jan 1885".
This is a good candidate.

Thank you so very much for you expertise, of the five pieces on the box I was able to find a clear one with a dot between the M and C
Thank you again.
