silver makers mark

Post by jok23 »

Wondering if anyone can identify the mark on this box, its IS over a swan. Only a single mark. Not sure if English or Continental, but looks to date around 1800.

Hi,

It looks a good match for John Swann, if so, then the box would be somewhat earlier, the mark was apparently registered at the LAO in 1714. As I'm sure you know, maker's marks for silver registered in this period were composed of the first two letters of the surname, so perhaps this punch should have been reserved for use on gold items, or in this case, perhaps a silver item not sent for assay.
