Claret Jug from Jamaican Estate

Postby lovesilver » Sun Nov 26, 2006 8:38 pm

This was given to me from a relative who purchased it at a Jamaican Estate and I have found conflicting information in trying to date the piece. The maker's mark is first and reads either OREB or UREB. Then the lion is very clear - making it British, correct? Then the uncrowned leopard - citing London post 1822, correct? Then the letter "i" looking to be either from 1744 or 1924. Then it appears to be Queen Victoria?? A solid profile facing left? The stem is decorated with a Julius Ceaser type figure rising from a crown?? Any help is much appreciated!

I hope I am adding this picture correctly!

That's a nice looking piece you have.

I think you've misread the maker's mark: it looks to me like GR,EB which stands for George Richards and Edward Brown.
It was made in 1864. It can't be 1744 or 1924 because queen Victoria was either not born or dead (respectively), and that is her bust, you're quite right.
