Geo III Dessert Spoon

Postby lewi » Thu Nov 23, 2006 12:34 pm

Can anyone help with this unusually shaped 'RR' for the makers name.
Originally thought it was Robert Rutland - but he wasn't registered until 1807 - & I make the spoon to be 1772.

Any ideas please for this novice collector?
Many thanks in advance

Hello John,

A possibility is Richard Redrick (according to Grimwade): his third mark was entered as a smallworker in 1768. I've searched the internet and found a few spoons by him (marks not pictured I'm afraid) one was from 1771 so he's quite likely.
The strange thing was, I found the pieces on some very famous auction sites, one of which was Bonham's, and they all said "probably by Richard Redrick".

This confusion reminds me of a poem that was printed in one of Christie's catalogues from the 30's. I did consider these two RR makers for your piece but I've only seen their marks with a pellet in the middle.

Said Robert Rew to Richard Rugg
"R R's my mark"; but with a shrug
Said Richard Rugg to Robert Rew
"I'm R R just as much as you";
So neither yielded; both held out,
And left the question still in doubt.

Hi Miles
Thanks so much for your detailed response. It's been very helpful - stunned by your knowledge.
Nice little ditty too!
Thanks again
