Need Help with Maker and verification of duty/date/city/std

Hi -first time looking up hallmarks and have concluded this is a claret (what were they used for?) duty=1786-1821, date=1790, city=london,std=sterling.925 but can't figure out the maker - can anyone help - thanks in advance - Fred

Hi Fred,

I don't know who to suggest apart from John Robbins. Grimwade's London Goldsmiths says he started in 1774 and I've seen pieces attributed to him from 1807. He made some very fine pieces.

As for your piece, I think they're more fully called claret jugs and were used to pour out red wine. I'm sure claretjugcollector (a member here) could tell you anything you want to know about them.
