Help with Maker's mark and function?

I found this bowl (?) at an estate sale last weekend, and I am so curious about it. I have found the rest of the marks as they are standard marks for English Silver, but I cannot find the maker's mark. It looks like the letter "B" with two "B's" in the spaces that make up the letter B. The bowl itself is red glass that's been hand carved/ buffed and shaped to fit the base. The base has four elephants, each elephant has either glass or ruby eyes. The piece is just amazing, and I want to know more about it. Help?

It's almost certainly EB over JB for Edward & John Barnard (trading as Edward Barnard & Sons):



As for its use I would suggest it's some sort of table centre piece for whatever you might want to decorate your formal table with (fruit, nuts, flowers, etc). I am sure it would look so much better if you clean it up.

It`s a condiment dish.

Try to show us better image of the date letter.
It should be mid 19th century.
I judged the dimension having seen the item in your hand.

I hope that helps, i'm trying to very carefully clean it, but it's going to take a lot more work. It doesn't look like the same hallmark that was afore mentioned, unless their mark changed?

size wise, I would agree that it could be a condiment dish. it is oval, about 2 1/2 inches by 1 1/2 inches, and about two inches deep.

EB over JB into a quatrefoil is the mark of Edward and John Barnard, as said above.
The year is 1863
