Trying to identify maker of spoon

Postby esf » Fri Sep 08, 2006 5:42 pm

I am sorting out a family home and found a spoon. I searched the marks here and as far as I can see it is a British maker. The images I took of the marks are through a magnifying glass so I pieced them together for ID purposes and they may not be exactly the right proportions as seen on the spoon but they are in the same order.

The spoon is inscribed G.B. 1887. Can anyone tell me anything more about the spoon? Any help will be appreciated.

Made in London 1826 by Richard Britton who was a spoonmaker between 1812 and 1842.

Thanks for your prompt reply. I would assume that the initials on the handle of the spoon are the owner's monogram, but have never seen a date used with the initials. However, I don't know much about silverware. Is there any significance to the use of a date or is it just to mark an occasion.

The spoon is about 8 1/2 inches long and the bowl is 1 3/4 inches at its widest part.

often a date was put on to commemorate a wedding, christening or even birthday. Usually 2 sets of initials for a wedding.
