British spoons

Postby Juke » Sun Aug 27, 2006 3:55 am

I have a set of spoons recently aquired to my collection. These are a little challenging as the marks are quite worn. Interpretation might be need to be made on the form and pattern but you as experts know best. I would also like to know the pattern names on spoons number 2 and 4. Also interested to know the reason why some of the spoons are not fully marked.

Image

The spoons are from left to right.

Mark: PR, lion passant, crowned leopard's head and 1774-75 (worn but can be interpreted, not maybe well in picture)

Image

Mark: ? and RS (no other marks)

Image

Mark: lion passant, 1790-91, duty mark and I? (last letter might be F so could it be John Fayle; could also be something else like T)

Image

Mark: lion passant and DC (no other marks).

Knowledge on any of them would be very much appreciated. Even an estimate on a time period would be nice to know when exact year can not be given due to missing mark.

Hello Juhana,

The pattern on spoons 2 and 4 (starting from left) where the finial bends to the front of the spoon is known as Hanoverian pattern which was most common from 1710-1775. The other two are Old English pattern.
Teaspoons before 1780 were usually only marked with the lion passant and a maker's mark. However, with table spoons, a full set of hallmarks was used, so I suspect that there were some on your spoon which have been worn off.

Here's what I think your spoons are:

1. Old English pattern table spoon by Philip Roker III.
2. Hanoverian table spoon by Robert Sallam c.1765.
3. Old English pattern teaspoon by John Bourne.
4. Hanoverian teaspoon c.1775, I've never seen this maker's mark before.

Hello Miles,

I am 100 % totally amazed about your knowledge on British marks and how you could figure out the makers. Greatly appreciated.
