1922 London flatware -- maker?

Postby NancyK » Fri Jul 21, 2006 8:33 pm

I hope I've done everything right this time. ;) This pattern resembles Gorham's Kings II, but the maker (D&JW) eludes me and it's in none of my references or anywhere on the site that I see. Also, the sailing ship engraving -- is it a monogram?

If anyone has any ideas, I'd be most appreciative!

Don't know the pattern but the maker is D & J Wellby Ltd, makers circa 1850 onwards, known for fine copies of earlier pieces.

Thank you both!

What is the purpose of the sailing ship engraving? Is it occupation-related? All the pieces in this set carry it.

Nancy,

The ship is the crest of a particular family; they help to protect against theft and to show off. It's not as easy as you might think to trace the family to which a crest belongs. There is a book called Fairbairn's Crests of the Families of Great Britain and Ireland which has copies of many crests; however, more than one family often used the same crest. For instance your ship looks like the ship on plate 77 which was used by the families: Barrat, Barratt, Chrichton, Daniel, Mill, Milne and Tighe. If anyone has further information on how to narrow the search, please tell.

The engraving is probably someone's family crest, believe it's a lymphad, a small galley ship usually connected to Scottish families or towns. Hopefully someone with a stronger knowledge of heraldry will come along and ID it.
