Shell back Hanoverian spoon.

Postby Granmaa » Fri Jun 09, 2006 7:52 am

Here is a little shell back Hanoverian teaspoon with the lion passant and a maker's mark; I'd say it was made in the 1750s. The mark could be JW, but I'm not sure; does anyone recognize it?

Hi Miles

My gut reaction was that the first letter is "T" - as in a "curly" version. Like the mark of Thomas Heming.

Am in a rush, hence the brief answer

Jackson's show Thomas Hemings' mark in a rounded cartouche (p.206), but I agree with you that it could be a T. I've come to the conclusion that the second letter is an H, K or R. Flicking through Jackson's, I came across Thomas Rush (p.192), but his "date entered" is a bit early for a shell back spoon; his final date is not given.
I'm sorry I can't find any pictures of these makers, but the internet is absolutely useless for makers of this period. I do appreciate any effort made to identify this one.

Hi Miles

Yes, I only used Heming as an example of the letter. I can't help but think that the second letter may be a "W" - what do you think?

I think you may be right Waylander, but I still can't find a candidate.

I've played about with the contrast and brightness; see what you all make of it now.
