Help needed to interpret maker's mark

Hi,

This George III meat skewer is clearly marked except for the maker's mark, which I am struggling to identify. Does anybody have any clues as to who it might be?

Many Thanks
Martin

I have enlarged and rotated the maker's mark image, possibly revealing JS, i am not entirely convinced though.

Good morning Martin,

Kept spinning my iPad around in an attempt to discern the correct position. Appears that the cross may sit to the right which alludes to a capital H pellet I or L over C pellet as in

H * I or L
C * ???

Did a cursory run through on the Hs, possibly Ks and as a last resort Bs over at Silver Makers Marks with no luck. Keep shotting to see if any other details appear.

Good luck
Warren

Thanks Warren. Its almost as if its been deliberately disguised to be unreadable, doesn't seem consistent with normal wear.

Martin.

Could it be that another makers mark has been over stamped on the old makers mark, that is why reading it is difficult and also making it difficult to determine the maker.

Martin,

Don't want to be an alarmest but you may want to read an article posted here at 925.

Look at the top of the page then open library. Click: articles on silver. On the right column there is an article titled: Spurious marks on English silver. www.925-1000.com/a_Spurious1899.html Read through that an see what you think. There are knowledgable people who may be able to assist you further.

I'll keep my eyes posted for any possible mark.
