Hello Fred,
PS marks are attributed to Paul Storr within the Forum’s British Hallmarks section. The Forum examples of his marks are said to be those of 1793 and 1807 featured at Grimwade 2234 and 2235.
It seems to me the mark displayed by Grimwade 2235 and the one by the Forum are dissimilar in two respects in that Grimwade’s example shows a pellet between the initials and also the letter spacing is different. Grimwade does however note that Storr entered later marks similar to the one of 1807 but doesn’t provide images of these. The later marks may not have had a central pellet and may have varied in the letter spacing. The mark here may be one of those. On that basis the mark on the stand could be attributed to Storr.
The images of the glassware seem to me not to show the sharpness of the high quality one would expect from a Storr product; indeed the images give the impression of blown rather than cut glass but you have the real items to be able to judge. A snug fit of glass into the stand holders would be expected. The glassware could, of course, be replacement.
The images suggest the style of the tops is generally consistent with the stand but again only you could say that with certainty. The stamps of the hallmarks on the tops appear to have caused the same buckling of the plate in each case which is unexpected.
The PS marks on the tops seem similar in format to the one on the stand albeit nibbled at the edges suggesting perhaps that they could have been made by a different punch. The Storr workshop, noted for their high class work, would certainly be less likely to employ a damaged punch. The image of the standard mark for each of the tops does not wholly convince.
On the face of it there seem to be inconsistencies. Other members could, of course, see things differently.
Regards,
Mike
