Need Help with a London Hallmark

Postby vtcoins24 » Wed May 11, 2011 4:38 pm

Larger plate/platter. 14.5 inches in diameter and 1,440 grams in weight.

I can see that it is London and from the year 1800. Unable to identify the "HC IE" maker. There is also a "#535 MNE MA ea" scratched onto the back of the plate.

Any ideas who the maker is and if this item is a better piece?

Thanks!

Hi,

It would be good to hear the thoughts of others, but I fear that you may have a spurious piece of silver.

On first glance this piece appears to have been made by the quality partnership of Henry Chawner and John Emes. But the more that I look at this set of marks, the more unhappy I am with them.

The Duty mark that would have used in conjunction with the dateletter 'E' would have been set in a plain oval with no cusps, there were no Duty increases in 1800/1 and the last use of a three cusp mark would have been in 1798. The Crowned Leopard's head with that gapping mouth is also, to my eyes, not correct and the bridge of his nose does not line up with the centre of the crown. The canted corners on the top of the Lion Passant appear uneven, with one angle far more acute than the other. The maker's mark has a massive chip broken off the top of the punch, that in itself is not a problem, but I would be surprised that a quality firm such as Chawner & Emes would have used an obvious broken punch.

But, I'm tired and just got in from work, perhaps when I look at this again in the the morning, things will seem different, but...

Trev.
