Trying to id maker on soup ladle.

Postby techsol » Fri Apr 22, 2011 3:17 am

I would be grateful for some help with a London soup ladle I own, it is dated 1770, the makers mark is partially rubbed. To me it looks like TE but could possibly be TB, does anyone have any ideas on a possible maker for this item?

It could be Thomas Evans (senior). There does seem to be confusion regarding the marks of the father and son Evans, both were known spoonmakers. Thomas (senior)'s mark may well have been entered in the missing largeworker's register, although a spoonmaker, table spoons and above were considered largework at this time, so here may lie the answer.

It would be good to hear the opinions of others.

Hello All

This ladle seems similar to the one assayed in 1778 also carrying the maker's mark TE and discussed at viewtopic.php?f=48&t=21334.

In that discussion Thomas Ellis was mentioned. If Grimwade was right and Ellis did register a mark before 1773 this might be it.
