Here is an interesting item for you all to look at:
Marks:
It is a lovely Sugar bowl - nice shape and style. 21cm in diameter including the handles and the opening of the bowl is 10cm in diameter. Total weight is 396g.
Maker: Edward, Edward Junior, John & William Barnard (I believe this mark was registered in 1829 and used up until 1846? This maker is known to have made tea services - I understand this piece would have originally been one of a set. Only days after buying it at auction I saw a full set by the same maker which included the same style sugar bowl [without the engraved decoration] for sale in a local antiques shop at Barnard Castle.)
Assay: London
Monarch: Victoria (1837-1901)
The date letter is my problem - it is extremely rubbed and hardly remains at all.
The monarchs mark, and information on the maker has allowed me to narrow it down to 1837-1846, and out of the date letters used in London at those times, I think it most resembles the mark for 1842:
Would you agree?
Sorry if this is a stupid question considering how rubbed the mark is - I would just like to pinpoint it down to one year.
Regards,
Piette
